1 Celebrating Diversities. (2015)
This
medal walks the boundary between war, peace and reconciliation. It seeks to
question what a perfect world will be- is it one where differences amongst
individuals, communities and countries are acknowledged and accepted, or one
where these differences do not exist at all? Using line imagery to explore the
contrast and correspondence of this theme, the lines on the obverse of the
medal represents our differences which sometimes run parallel and sometimes
meet. Whiles the reverse of the medal is a mirror. The text on the rim by
Carlos Fuentes relates the two sides of the medal by asking the viewer to
“recognize yourself in he and she who are not like you and me” as they behold
their images in the mirror. Like the lines on the obverse of the medal, although
co-existence is at times difficult because of our differences, it is in the
acknowledging and celebrating of our diversities that we could create a better
world. The medal “Celebrating Diversities” is inspired by the Herbert touring
exhibition “Caught in the Crossfire” which was at Guildford House Gallery which
celebrates artistic responses to conflict, peace and reconciliation.
